Two holiday parties, one Christmas morning, seventeen hours of driving, one hundred tennis ball throws for Pawley, seven bajillion calories consumed, one Christmas Eve service, and much gift-giving and receiving later I’m back in DC. It was a whirlwind and wonderful weekend. And, considering I’ve made this move as complicated as possible, it was a good chance for me to get accustomed to my life as a commuter between DC and NC for the next month.
It occurred to me as I went to pick up my brother on Friday afternoon that there are exactly six roads between Washington, DC and my parents’ driveway. That’s kind of crazy because there are also 438 miles.
What’s really remarkable, is that of those six roads, with my brother driving we missed the turns for three of them. THREE. I’d like to say I handled this well, but every time I realized he’d done something like, you know, MISS AN INTERSTATE, I’d promptly announce that I was going to murder him. Then, five minutes later, once I’d calmed considerably and it seemed like we might be again on the correct track, I’d calmly tell him not to worry, it wasn’t a big deal. He pointed out that I should maybe not be such a psycho and then he wouldn’t worry.
Yesterday, I drove back to DC on my own—and didn’t miss any turns. It was a considerably easier (six roads, not ten) and shorter (seven hours, not eleven) drive. But, to be honest, it wasn’t nearly as fun.
