The day I entered DC, my iPhone entered the Dark Ages. It stopped showing missed calls. It stopped making calls. It stopped ringing. It basically worked only slightly better than me stringing together two cans. I’ve had so many appointments at the Genius Bar in the last few weeks, my calendar looks like I think it’s an actual bar. And I have a drinking problem.
Anyway, tonight I’d finally had it. My phone had missed four calls today. On a regular day, that’s annoying. But right now I’ve just started a new job and I’m in the process of making the most complicated and difficult move since the Israelites left Egypt for the Promised Land. Maybe more complicated than that even because Moses didn’t have to negotiate with moving companies.
Anyway, I keep getting off track. My point is to tell you about Troy, the guy who works at the Georgetown Apple store and might be my favorite person on earth. (Man, I am on a roll with the exaggerations in this post.)
When I got to the Apple store, I was annoyed. Annoyed because it was cold and I was hungry and iPhones are expensive and I’d just calculated that boarding Pawley during this move was going to cost me the equivalent of a down payment on a house. Then I met Troy. When I told him I wanted a new iPhone, he said, “Sarah, tonight I’m going to make all of your dreams come true.” That seemed a little presumptuous, but sure, ok.
Every time I would ask Troy a question, he would say, “Is that part of your dream, Sarah?” And when I’d say yes, he’d say “Well, then, I’m making it come true. Because tonight all your dreams come true.” I thought about asking him if he could take care of a mutt for three weeks for free, but decided not to actually scare Troy.
Eventually, Troy gave me my new iPhone and it’s perfect. Not because of some fancy Siri or iCloud thing, but because IT ACTUALLY RINGS when someone is calling me. I thanked Troy and told him that he had made my dreams come true. And that’s where things got a little weird. ”Sarah,” he said. “You need to dream bigger then. You need to dream bigger than this iPhone and this store. And not just tonight. You need to dream of the future. Keep dreaming.”
I nodded, agreed, took my iPhone, and left. Troy is definitely crazy. But I like the way he thinks. And I like my new phone.
