My new office looks over Occupy DC. This is really great for me because I thought I was going to miss looking out the window at crazy people every day after I moved away from Cowboy. And as it turns out, I don’t have to feel homesick for that even a little bit.

At this very moment, there is a guy who is standing in the middle of the sidewalk yelling “FREEDOM!” Mel Gibson Braveheart style. Repeatedly. I’m seven floors up and can hear him quite clearly. If I were down there, I think I’d give him a high five because how many times have we all wanted to do that, you know?

When I walked by their encampment at lunch today there were two old guys arguing over where their tent “yards” ended and began. One guy owned a dog and he wanted to have some space between their tents for his dog. He felt the other guy’s tent was currently infringing on said space. I literally heard him say the words “This is my yard, you need to keep off of it.” Um. No. Sir. It’s not. It’s actually a public park. Where you’ve currently put down hay for your dog to play in.

Yesterday I went to lunch with a coworker across the street from the park. One of the occupiers came in and sat at a table next to us and then turned around and stared at us for our entire lunch. After awhile, she stood up and stared down at us and began talking about how everyone was lying to her. And to us. And something about sandwiches. I don’t know. It was really confusing.

Anyway, I have no idea what the movement looks like in other parts of the country, but I’ve got a pretty clear view of it in DC where it’s basically turned into communal living for aged hippies and homeless people. And I’m actually starting to suspect it’s just a place where people can go to act insane. Like that Mel Gibson wannabe? I’m not even sure he’s part of Occupy. I think he might just be a federal employee on his lunch break. Maybe tomorrow I’ll walk over and see what kind of crazy I can contribute.
